Bow specs

Postby Tigger » 04 23, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Okay guys, I got the bow tuned up, new rest, and am ready to rock an roll for the summer. I am shooting 268 fps on a chrono, 388 grain arrows with 100 gr Slick Trick standard broadheads (388 grains includes broadhead). Does this fall into the "that'll get'er done" category?

Need to get your weight up closer to 425 if you are asking about elk. Good luck

Agree with welka. Would try to get arrow weight up to at least the 410/415 range. Not to say that proper shot placement wouldn't get'er done, but my preference would be a little heavier.

Keep in mind that for every 3 grains of arrow weight added, you'll lose 1fps in speed. So, if you add 27 grains to get up to 415 total weight, your arrow speed will still be around 257fps.

is the best way to just go to 125 grain broadheads from 100 grain? I really don't want to buy new arrows.

First, realize I am kinda a rookie at this archery game.....

I am not sure what the spine is....but they are Beman Bowhunter ICS 400 8.4 gpi. 63# of draw weight, arrow length is 28" (not including nock or field tip/broadhead).

Spine is a measurement of the stiffness of your arrows. You could certainly try 125 grain heads to see how they tune and group. If they don't fly perfectly, I would guess your spine my be a little weak. Easy fix, just turn your draw weight down about 1/2 crank.
But, I would bet, that you will be okay with 125's. Try them and let us know how they fly.

He can't afford to turn his draw weight down ANY!

Easiest route is to try the 125 g head IF your draw isn't 29 or higher. If it is longer, you will likely have trouble if your arrows are not stiff enough as they will suffer from accuracy due to excessive flexing. Good luck.

Yikes, this is more technical than I thought! My draw length is 28 or 28.5. 28 I think. My knuckles don't drag when I walk anyway. I could always add some duck tape the arrows to make them stiffer, right?

Gonna go get some 125g target tips and see how they fly.

So what I am getting out of this is that people think I need a heavier arrow and 388g isn't enough with a Slick Trick broadhead?

That would be an excellent deer setup.

If you want to add arrow weight without changing your spine, you could always just add arrow tube weights. They come in 3, 5 & 8 gpi.
