making excuses (mission complete)

Postby wawhitey » 08 20, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Okay so i dont have to answer to anybody when i buy stupid toys, but justifying them to myself makes the decision to throw away money a bit easier. So here is my latest that im working on. My core elk area will be closed for archery season due to fire danger, so i am turning my tag in for modern firearm. I feel that hunting elk with a new gun would go a long way toward making up for my disappointment at missing my september season. That being said, i want to pick up a s&w .460xvr. Has anybody actually shot one? Ive been talking myself into buying one for a long time but what has always given me pause is the thought that i might decide its too much after i shoot it. I have a .44 mag with an 8.5 in ported barrel that i dont mind shooting at all, but the .460 is a big step up. What do you guys think? Anybody here actually own one?

Nope! a friend owns the .454 Cassul. (spelling) He says it's a tank to shoot for sure but not horribly bad, you don't shoot it with one hand! (grin)

I don't have a .460, but do have the .500 with a 4". I find it kicks less than my .44 redhawk 4" and a lot less than my .44 329pd. Its due to the weight and the ported muzzle brake. I am planning on getting the 329pd ported before next season.

I have not shot the .460 but have shot the .500mag. The 500 that I shot has the muzzle brake that vents straight up which I don't care for as some of that blast hits me in the face and it's uncomfortable to say the least. The owner of the gun does not have that issue so it could be just me. If I were to get one, I'd buy the PC model with the custom brake or make sure the model I bought had both style of brakes with it. They're tanks of a gun and awkward to carry so I'd take a hard look at holsters too. Pretty cool that you can shoot .45 Colt and .454 Casull out of it. The .45 Colt loads must feel like a .22 after firing a cylinder full of .460's. I know that shooting my Ruger Alaskan with .45 Colt feels like a .38 Special after shooting full house .454's in it.

These guns come with 2 compensators. The one that comes on the gun has vent holes on top which helps reduce recoil more, but its only for shooting jacketed rounds. If youre going to shoot straight lead bullets you need to put in the comp with no upper vents to prevent lead fouling of the front sight, so i went ahead and swapped them out.

So i havent even shot it yet, but the thing is too damn shiny for my purposes, so in a couple days im dropping it off in spokane to be cerakoted. I was going to do a 2 tone od green / matte black, but i figure a ridiculous gun needs a ridiculous "paint job," so im having the whole thing done in kryptex highlander. The cerakote guy has to order the patterns and colors to make it happen. I may have serious mental issues. I dont know though, and dont really care anyway. This thing is going to be a hideous abomination, and i am thrilled.

Man, that thing looks awesome. Please post up a range report. I'm thinking this would be ideal for sitting in KS deerstands and have been looking at one of the XVR's.

Ill be shooting it in the morning for the first time. I have the hotrod 200 grain hornadys, plus i think 320 grain hardcast hsm bear loads, and 360 grain buffalo bore hard casts. This should be fun. Oh and i just ordered a set of nill-griffe xl rosewood custom grips!! Dealer here in u.s. is out of stock so have to wait for them to come in from europe, 3-6 weeks supposedly.

Shootin mighty fine, especially the 200gr hornadys. Few fliers, but first time shooting this thing, cant blame myself for being a little flinchy. All in all shot real good groups, and didnt kick as bad as i thought it would. However, the 325gr hsm bear loads, third cartridge misfired!! Thats the end of those bullets for me. Now i dont even want to shoot the hsm bear loads from my .44 either. As for the 360gr buffalo bore, shot pretty well but inly shot a handful of those. Killer gun though.

Want to add, as you can see in this pic, the cerakoting is getting scorched off at the compensator (expected) and around the forward end of the cylinder (not expected,) which im really not worried about. This gun, like all my others, is not going to be a safe queen. Thought id throw it out there though, incase anybody else got it in their head to do something similar. If it would bother you, maybe dont cerakote your cylinder. This is after 25 rounds. I expect it will be a bit more pronounced after a bit more shooting.

Nice, I came close to buying the XVR Performance Center with a 10.5" barrel until I held one that was scoped. That's a lot of steel hanging out there to support. I did hold a S&W 500 with a 7.5" barrel and liked how it balanced in my hand. I think I'm going to go a different route and pickup a T/C Contender with a 30/30 Super 14 barrel. Hopefully the used one I saw a month ago is still for sale. That'll be plenty of power for 100 yard whitetail shots.

Dang that looks good! That grip is gorgeous too! Now I'm no expert, but I would have thought a gun that powerful is too much for a deer, (dont hate me).
I hope you shoot something with it, and make sure you get entry/exit pictures of the wound along with everything else, please! Have fun :D

Oh its awesome to shoot. Only tried a few types of factory ammo in it, but it shoots the 200gr hornadys real well. And i shot some .45lc through it and it felt like shooting a .22. When shooting the .460 rounds you know you pulled the trigger for sure. Next time i get home ill put some more holes in paper with it and post the results. Havent killed an animal with it yet. That is a sweet looking gun, I love the look of the wood grips. If you had to do it again would you still cerakote it? I am looking at getting a handgun for deer and big game hunting.

Absolutely. It looks great, protects the gun, and a shiny ass object reflecting light will ruin a close up shot opportunity.
